My rented apartment was without heat

It couldn’t replace a fully-functioning gas furnace, baseboard heaters, or a heated floor system, but beggars can’t be choosers, and our openings were slim

I hadn’t realized how chilly it had gotten outside! After a long afternoon of skiing at our favorite resort, I drove back to the AirBnB I was renting to get some much-needed shut-eye before our next ski session tomorrow, and as I exited the car and walked toward the front steps, I felt the icy wind on our exposed face… However, I was glad I went to the beach condo when I did! Now to soak up some delicious heated air in the modern home I had rented, however perhaps I’d even consider taking a hot bath to ease our sore muscles! When I opened the door, I was surprised that it wasn’t warmer inside. In fact, it was almost as chilly as the air outside. I reached down to locate a hand against the baseboard heaters, and didn’t know any warmth. Perplexed, I found a thermostat on the wall, and cranked it up. I waited a few minutes, and nothing seemed to change. I searched for signs of a gas furnace, but didn’t see any vents in the floors or the ceiling. I did the next-best thing and looked around for a space heater. It couldn’t replace a fully-functioning gas furnace, baseboard heaters, or a heated floor system, but beggars can’t be choosers, and our openings were slim. I found it hiding in a linen closet, and jammed it in at as central a point in the modern home as I could find. I couldn’t believe the HVAC system wasn’t working! I double-inspected the rental listing, and saw our screw-up: the modern home listed that it had a central air conditioning, but next to a little flame icon, the listing clearly said, “No heat.” No wonder I had gotten such a nice deal! Next time, I resolved to read the wonderful print.
